NGC 278 is a nuclear ring starburst galaxy, mag. 11.7, classified as SBb (pec).

NGC 278 may be undergoing the intense starburst due to a recent merger with a smaller gas-rich companion which is now dispersed to the outer ring (Knapen, et.al., 2004).
