NGC 404 is classified EO. It is referred to as Mirach's Ghost. Mirach (mag 2.0) is the bright star (beta Andromeda) and visually NGC 404 appears as a reflection of Mirach in the telescope eyepiece.
The colorful flare around Mirach is due to internal reflections between the CCD and the filters.
